I already did my squats and lunges as "warmup" and I still feel hella sore. If you've seen me play, you'll see that I'm constantly in a "squat" position (similar to tennis players i guess). out of everything from my days in a badminton club, the one thing i hear is, "form is important, know where you are, know how you're standing. DON'T just stand there looking like a log." I guess that was something drilled in my head. So you'll see me standing back in "starting/center/base" position all the time with my racquet ready to hit something.
Apparently I entered the court and started rallying with my parents and some people asked my parents, "Does your daughter play?" I didn't hear this cause I zone out when I play, I'm a tad tooo focused on what I'm doing and how I should improve.
How do people know if i've played badminton before? how does a badminton player look? To me, it seemed like ALL the adults from mainland China knew how to play/played before.....
OH! I finally tried my arc sabre! YAY! my 100 dollar racquet put to use! got into a collision when I was playing doubles and my heart skipped a beat. Thankfully, NOTHING happened. Compared to my old wilson racquet, this one was WAY better. one, it's a more balanced racquet (my old one was head heavy- I actually had trouble smashing with that racquet). For my long shots I actually needed a lot less force to hit it to the spot I wanted. Maybe I was playing my wilson racquet wrong, I dunno. The thing I had trouble with was actually doing soft shots. Any amount of strength I put into hitting made it go soooo much further than I anticipated (i'm thinking this has something to do with the tension in my strings and i'm not used to it). I almost feel like such a liar for using my racquet....i'm soooo newb, but i'm using such a nice racquet>.<
I actually had to learn to play backyard style with my mother because she's a tad uncoordinated and I felt bad for smashing everything at her.
For being out of shape, I was able to play for 1 hour and 45 minutes worth before I went for a 5 minute break. I feel quite proud. My muscles didn't start to grown till about 1 hour in and then I pushed myself for another 45 mins because I just wanted to keep playing. I also want to play vollyball, but that's probably even more strenuous on my joints.
Glad I'm not as out of shape as I thought I'd be. Some day, playing a full 2 hours without a break will be fine and dandy. I'll have to work on my left arm so that it doesn't become flabby and my right tooo muscular.
I do wish there were more young people and people would speak english. But they're all chinese, so Chinese is comforting to them. Oh wells, time for ME to learn to speak better chinese.
Oh...btw, I finally understand when people say the feel of a plastic shuttle cock and a shuttle cock with feathers are different. I LOVE playing with a feathered shuttle cock! it just feels....i don't know...much better. A plastic birdy just sucks. My smashes also aren't as nice with a plastic one. is that normal? Plus, a feathered shuttle cock also sounds different. Am I being odd?
There are a few things I'd like to do better. 1) I wanna serve better. My serve SUCKS! my serve is rarely close to the line, nor is it "low". I serve like a newb, it's normally lobbed high and true AND directly AT the opponent. A pro would smash it back at me because it's at perfect height to do so. This rarely happened to me today, but that's cause no one was being too "cruel" nor was anyone truly that pro (maybe minus 4 people that I didn't play against). 2, I want to smash better. Sure, every player says that. But I know I don't tend to do "true" smashes. yes, I typically try to aim for people's feet, but I normally end up hitting people's tummy area. Yeah, for most people, this is "good" enough as it's already hard to return back. But for me, i know what a true smash is, and what i'm doing ain't it. 3, I need better aim. No, I can aim for front or back court very well. My left to right side aim is kind of on the weak side though. 4, i need to learn my rules again. I'm rusty and out of practice. oh...the courts were smaller than I remember...or is it because i'm bigger now?
i must say it's exhilarating to be back on the court. I look forward to Friday! Badminton! HERE I COME!
